At the edge of the Tsitsikama Mountains and overlooking the Matjies River gorge is Hog Hollow, a country lodge that is an outstanding jewel of the Garden Route.

It’s all about relaxation at Hog Hollow and guests can take comfort in the peaceful surrounds and beautiful location of the lodge. Located about 20 km outside Plettenberg Bay at The Crags, the area is a stunning part of the country that could rival any other picturesque location in South Africa in terms of natural beauty.

The four-star lodge is at the centre of a wide variety of outdoor (but not too strenuous) activities. Plettenberg Bay and The Crags are home to a horde of activities to suit all types (just look at the Plett Tourism website). In a single day you can find yourself on horseback exploring the forest trail around Hog Hollow, then later holding the trunk of an elephant at The Elephant Sanctuary and also coming face-to-face with a cheetah at Tenikwa.

Birds of Eden is also a must see. If you couldn’t spot a Knsyna Loerie from your deck at the lodge (we spotted several right in front of our unit), you can meet this beautiful bird at the sanctuary.

Another absolute must is Monkeyland. Take an hour’s stroll with a guide through the forest and get to meet a variety of primates including ring-tailed lemurs, vervet monkeys and spider monkeys, to name a few.

The lodge itself is a hit with international travellers and it has every reason to be. Hog Hollow gives visitors an authentic African experience right here in the Western Cape — one can sit on the boma deck that overlooks the valley while sipping on a glass of Sauvignon Blanc from neighbouring Bramon Wine Estate as the fire crackles, before dining at Main House for a spectacular fine dining experience.

I loved the peaceful setting and privacy of the units at Hog Hollow. Each one is secluded from the others and has their own deck on which to relax. Should you feel like taking the relaxation a step further, there are hammocks that can be set up to fully enjoy the splendour of the surrounds.

A dream destination for travellers who want to experience the natural beauty of the Garden Route in luxury.
