The Western Cape has 2799 active cases of COVID-19 as of 1pm, March 12. The province’s total number of COVID-19 infections has now reached 277 311 confirmed cases and 263 178 recoveries. This is a 94.9 percent recovery rate.

A total of 23 130 out of the 25 960 vaccines received to date, as part of the Sisonke trial, had been administered by 5pm on 11 March, reports Premier Alan Winde. This indicates that 89 percent of the total number of vaccines have been used.

Some healthcare workers are being turned away following an influx of those needing to be vaccinated flooding Cape hospitals. More than 700 people queued outside Melomed Gatseville Hospital on Friday, reported Media 24.

Shameena Adams, hospital spokes person, said that the surge was unexpected, although they were pleased to see so many healthcare workers turn up for the jab.

“However, due to the high number of staff that came in for vaccines, we had to turn some of the healthcare workers away shortly after 11:00, having requested them to come back tomorrow,” she explained to News 24.

Adams continued, saying that the hospital will now be open an additional day (Saturdays) to cater for the healthcare workers.
