A brand new, exciting extravaganza of guitar sounds is about to take South Africa by storm, with concerts kicking off in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town in March 2019.
Guitar Wizards is a concept created by Corneille Hutten of the award-winning international band of two, South African guitar duo CH2. CH2 showcases what can be done with just two guitars, playing various styles from flamenco to fingerstyle guitar to pop, as well as mimicking drum and bass guitar sounds on classical guitars as well as acoustic guitars.
The Guitar Wizards concert series promises to be an eclectic lab of creativity and a salute to the sounds of acoustic guitar virtuosity.
First off in the Guitar Wizards series is a very special guest all the way from Poland, the wunderkind and international sensation, 18-year-old Marcin Patrzalek. He will join CH2 onstage for 90 minutes of heart-stopping guitar strumming.
CH2 has been on top of South Africa’s musical ladder for the past 18 years. The winners of multiple SAMA and Ghoema Awards, the duo have produced 11 albums, including the best-selling and Grammy entry ‘PING’ and their most recent release, ‘Insomnia – The Chapel Master’.
With their flawless, effortless technique and pulsating rhythms, CH2 has truly developed their own unique style and continues to blow audiences away with their talent. The members of CH2 see themselves as pioneers of the classical guitar, pushing the instrument into genres it is not known for.
Speaking from Pretoria, CH2 founder Hutten says, “I am super excited about the Guitar Wizards series and it is such an honour kicking this off with a true wizard on the guitar in Marcin! Audiences will be thrilled with only the best guitar playing in the world.”
Marcin Patrzalek is a Polish fingerstyle guitarist and winner of Poland’s biggest TV talent show, ‘Must be The Music’. Marcin is well-known for his guitar arrangements and compositions.
His musical journey began with the classical guitar, which he started playing at the age of 10. He won multiple prestigious classical international competitions, including the Joaquin Rodrigo Festival.
He later became interested in flamenco music, studying it under the guidance of Spanish virtuoso Carlos Pinana. Shortly afterwards, he discovered yet another style: acoustic fingerstyle. It was the style he found the most exciting and fitting to his approach to music.
Several years of practicing in this style, Marcin worked out a unique technique and style of his own which ended up in developing his own approach to percussive fingerstyle. His attention-grabbing debut album was released in 2016, and he is the author of many compositions and arrangements.
Marcin is thrilled to be visiting South Africa and working with CH2. Speaking from his home town of Kilce in Poland, Marcin says, “I’m extremely excited to have an opportunity to be part of the “Guitar Wizards” project. My excitement is even bigger when I’m thinking about the fact this project is set to be in South Africa. I can’t wait. See you soon!”
Audiences can expect an all-encompassing, stirring celebration of guitar music in all its forms. The programme will be filled with popular takes on the music of Metallica and Michael Jackson and CH2’s own compositions. The evening will also contain some signature classic guitar pieces like the theme of the Adagio movement of the Concerto de Aranjuez and Asturias.
