Another case of the coronavirus has been confirmed in South Africa as the wife of “patient zero”, the first confirmed case of the virus in the country, has also tested positive. The couple are from Hilton near Pietermartizburg in KwaZulu-Natal. The second patient that tested positive is from Gauteng.

The total number of confirmed cases in the country is now at three.

“This morning we have received results of the direct contact of the first patient, his wife. She had also travelled with him to Italy as part of a group of 10. I now wish to advise the public that she has tested positive for Covid-19 and is therefore the third confirmed case in South Africa,” Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said on Sunday.

The remaining six members who were part of the group who travelled together to Italy have also been tested and their results will be available in the next 48 hours.

“It is important to advise the public that the couple’s children were tested and their results have come out negative,” added Mkhize.

Even though the children have tested negative they will remain in self-quarantine until their parents recover from the virus.
