Are you tired of walking around with your hands reeking of garlic? Perhaps you’ve thrown away half of an avocado because it turned brown right before your eyes? Well, these nifty hacks are about to make your life much easier so make sure to try it out!
Say goodbye to nasty smelling hands
Struggling to get rid of that pungent garlic and onion smell? No problem! Simply make a paste consisting of one teaspoon of salt and two teaspoons of baking soda along with some water. Rub your hands together for 30-40 seconds, followed by a good soap and water scrub. Alternatively, you could grab onto a stainless steel item. Why stainless steel you might ask? Well, this method is said to work because the molecules in the steel binds with the sulphur compounds in the garlic, working to remove the odour.
Preserve fresh herbs
Are you worried that leftover herbs will go to waste? Fill an ice cube tray with chopped up herbs and pour in some olive oil. Leave it in the freezer to be used later. You can also combine herbs that you might use for chicken or fish and freeze it in one compartment.
Don’t stress about pots boiling over
If you’re tired of having to run to check whether your pot is boiling over, then make sure to try this hack. Place a wooden spoon over the top of the pot. When the water begins to boil up high, the spoon will pop the bubbles because wood is not a good material for conducting heat. The water won’t boil over as quickly, giving you enough time to lower the heat.
Decrystallize honey
No need to throw away honey that can still be used but has merely turned rock-hard over time. Place the container into a bowl of hot water for 5 to 10 minutes. Make sure to repeat the process if the water has cooled down and the honey hasn’t melted yet.
Remove eggshell pieces with ease
It can be frustrating to spend what seems like forever trying to remove eggshells from your mixture, especially when using a fork or spoon. A cool trick is to use the half-cracked eggshell, which works as a magnet to scoop up the broken piece that’s floating around.
Stop avocados from turning brown
Salvage avocados to get the most out of it by keeping the avocado pit in after it’s been cut. Thereafter, add a dash of lemon over the avocado, cover it tightly in cling wrap and store it in an airtight container. Even though this might temporarily lengthen the use of the avocado by a day or so, it’s a better idea than throwing the unused half away.
Keep carrots fresh
If you have already peeled and chopped carrots for the week, and have noticed that it has started to dry out, you could submerge it in water to restore the quality.
Make sure your eggs are still edible
While it might be difficult to smell whether an egg has gone bad, water certainly can get the job done. Gently place your uncooked eggs into a bowl of cold water, and if the egg sinks to the bottom, then it’s perfectly fine to use. If not, then it’s best to throw it away.
Retain the quality of cutting boards
By rubbing coarse salt and half of a lemon over a cutting board can help to eliminate nasty odours and retains the quality of the item.
