The increasing burdens of life paired with societal and personal pressures causes one to neglect their mental health. To improve this we have found five ways you can maintain your mental health, proving that even minor acts or changes to one’s lifestyle can make a big impact on how one feels emotionally, physically and mentally.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) marks October 10 as World Mental Health Day. The organisation defines mental health as “a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”
Here are some local activities to keep your mental health goals in check.
1. Embracing nature, walking outdoors
That relaxing feeling while walking through a forest or garden shows the impact nature has on stress levels. A study conducted at the University of British Colombia confirms that there is a direct connection between interacting with nature and relaxation.
Cape Town has an abundance of ideal hiking spots, take a stroll through the forests and embrace the quiet and fresh air as you take the time to detox from the hustle and bustle of the city.
2.A healthy diet
The connection between a healthy diet and mental health is important. ‘We are what we eat’, be careful of what you put in your body, making minor changes in diet can go a long way.
The UK Mental Health Foundation indicated that a diet inclusive of complex carbohydrates, essential fats, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and water can contribute to feelings of well-being.
There is no shortage of healthy alternatives in Cape Town – check out these five places to try out a delicious and nutritious smoothie bowl.
3.The art of Yoga
Yoga is highly beneficial to mental health and has the ability to refresh our minds, awaken our bodies and creates positive energy.
Calm your mind while you stretch and sweat out the toxins of the day at a session of yoga, Hot Pod Yoga has recently opened in Cape Town and offers a unique yoga experience in an inflated purple pod.
4. Wellness Spa
While we may think that a trip to the spa is to ‘treat ourselves’, a wellness spa gives us the chance to relax and rejuvenate, contributing to our mental well-being allowing us to unwind from daily stresses.
Head to the Delaire Graaf Spa to indulge in an ambience of solitude with one of the spa treatments offering a holistic experience from start to finish.
5. Take a break
Sometimes it is good to take a break – a change of scenery can do a world of good. The World Mental Health Foundation suggests that ‘taking a break’ can mean multiple things but solely rests on listening to your body.
If you feel the need to take a step back from reality and escape the noise of the world, Head to the idyllic areas of Simon’s Town or experience a little piece of Greece in Langebaan to recharge.
These nearby areas allow for an easy escape from the bustling city.
