“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” This is what we’ve been trained to believe, and there’s a good reason for that. Along with contributing to weight loss and nurturing a healthy habit, eating the right foods when the breakfast bell rings can help alleviate the dreaded morning grog.

Consuming a balanced breakfast that includes proteins, healthy fats and carbohydrates will not only help keep you full for longer but will help you acquire the energy boost you need. Ready to power walk through the day? Here are a few foods you should include when eating breakfast.

Eggs

Eggs are a great breakfast choice as they contain protein and healthy fats. Whether you enjoy them scrambled, fried, boiled or prefer taking your time whipping up an omelette, eggs are extremely versatile and are perfect with green vegetables in the morning.

Greek Yogurt

Probiotics are a great way to keep your gut healthy, which stops you from feeling sluggish as a result of poor digestion. Greek yoghurt is a great source of these living microorganisms, and it pairs perfectly with a plethora of delicious power foods, including berries, nuts, oats, honey, apples – the list goes on.

Ground Flaxseed

There are numerous benefits to flaxseed, including lowering your blood sugar and slowing down hunger pangs. If you hate snacking between meals, ground flaxseed is high in soluble fibre, which helps slow digestion. Add a few sprinkles of this to your oatmeal or yoghurt and you’ll be powering through the day.

Papaya

Add a few cubes to your smoothie, your greek yoghurt or enjoy it as is. This tropical fruit is bursting with flavour, antioxidants, and vitamins A and C. Not only will this put a pep in your step, but it will also help to support your immune system.

Berries

Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are high in antioxidants, fibre and vitamin C. Along with being considered a superfood, they are also low in calories and a healthy sweetness to any breakfast meal. Add a few berries to your smoothies, oatmeal or yoghurt for a powerful energetic combo. They’re also great to snack on during the day.

Avocado

Is there anything tastier than avocado on toast? Well, apparently there’s nothing healthier than this combo either. Avocados are filled with nutrients, including healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals – all of which help to boost your energy. Add it to a slice of whole-grain toast, or add it to a smoothie to give it a creamy consistency.
