During the winter season, we seem to be drawn towards comfort food while cuddling up under the covers and watching our favourite TV show.

But what about your health? According to Advice From a Twenty-something, not only does the winter season drive you towards eating more than you usually would, but exercise also isn’t made a priority when all you really want to do is stay warm.

Here are some helpful tips from indus health plus and SA health to help you stay healthy this winter:

Exercise

Exercise increases your energy, mood and it manages your weight gain. Turn your home into a gym and build healthy exercise habits for 3o minutes a day, three times a week.

Drink lots of water

Your body needs the exact same amount of water intake during winter as it does during summer. This prevents any dehydration that may leave you feeling weak, worn out and tired.

Eat healthily

Healthy foods contain many nutrients that can help your immune system to fight against illnesses. Try to avoid salty and sugary foods and opt for squash, fruit and lentils instead.

Skin issues

Cold weather may leave your skin dry and itchy, including onset of cracked lips and heels. Moisturising is a priority, even during winter in order to keep your skin feeling soft and supple. Once again, drinking an adequate amount of water can work wonders for your skin.

Sleep is a need

The recommended amount of sleep ranges between 7-8 hours. Restful sleep is helpful in keeping your immune system functioning at its optimum. It also eliminates any stress hormones and burns calories as well.

Health check-ups

During winter, it’s always necessary to go for regular health check-ups. Cold weather can trigger asthma, flu, sore throats, arthritis, and even a heart attack.
