The Western Cape government has lifted the ban on the selling of cigarettes during the lockdown today [1 April].

“Cigarettes may be sold during the lockdown, but only together with essential goods,” the government said in a statement.

This comes after the Garden Route District Municipality lifted the ban in the area just days before.

“We would like to thank all businesses in the province for the great sacrifices they are making during the lockdown to help us stop the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19) in the Western Cape,” the statement continued. “We know that times are tough, and so we continue to work hard to back businesses and to save businesses, jobs and the economy in the Western Cape.”

The habit is, however, identified as a risk factor when it comes to being infected with COVID-19.

Health experts have stated that individuals who continue to smoke are putting themselves in danger. This habit can make you more susceptible to the dangers of the virus in a significant way.
