After a long struggle amid regulation changes and the challenges due to coronavirus, popular restaurant Clarke’s Bar and Dining Room has announced a temporary closure.

On Wednesday, they posted on Facebook saying they have tried everything to stay afloat but due to a lack of customers since Sunday – and the ban on alcohol sales – it has been increasingly difficult to survive.

“We’ve dug a hole that gets bigger every day and we need to put the brakes on to try and save Clarke’s,” they said on their Facebook page.

While Clarke’s has called the closure “temporary”, it seems there are factors that could put an end to the eatery for good, if there is no support from the community.

“I hope there will be changes that will allow us to be back soon and save at least some of the jobs we have created. Please try to support us until the 26th, it will be a big help.”

The post was accompanied by a picture of Amos, a well-known Clarke’s staff member who has been unable to return to work due to being high risk.

Patrons were upset to hear the news on Facebook:

“HEART BREAKING – You are such great clients and we really feel so honored to be part of your business! I’m so so sorry for your such unneccessary hardship,” said one.

“Nooooooooooooo! Terrible news. Best burgers in town for a decade. Unpretentious and genuine staff, real food made with passion, always a vibe,” said another.

“Nooooo, my favourite place to go in Cape Town! Your Burgers and Aperol spritz are the best….oh and the macaroni…I’m going to miss it so much!” expressed another.

Now is the time to make a difference to the people of Cape Town, if you want to get out for a meal, show them some support.
