Locals may be in store for a dark evening following an announcement from Eskom that the power grid is under stress, and this could lead to load shedding tonight (January 30).

According to the power utility, it is currently supplying the demand by using diesel reserves. However, due to delayed maintenance on some units, these reserves have been used throughout the night and may exhaust later this evening.

Unplanned load shedding took place in some areas this morning, and maintenance is continuing with teams working around the clock to return the units to working order.

While Eskom continues to work towards remedying the problem, residents are being asked to save as much electricity as they can and to prepare in case of unplanned power outages this evening.
