Breakdancing has been proposed as an addition to the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris, France.

The International Olympic Committee, a non-profit independent international organisation made up of volunteers, released a statement saying that the proposal to introduce breakdancing as a new Olympic sport would be reviewed before final approval.

It added, “A recommendation by the Commission will then be presented to the IOC Executive Board in March. If accepted, it will then be presented to the IOC Session.”

In addition to the proposed sport, breakdancing, skateboarding and sport climbing made their debut as medal events in the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires held in 2018. An official debut of the new sports categories added, which included skateboarding, surfing and climbing will make their debuts at the Olympic programs in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

According to AFP, the competitive breakdancing events held in the Buenos Aires youth Olympics were in the form of “battles”.

The IOC is committed to building on the Olympic Agenda 2020 and making the Olympic program “gender-balanced, more youth-focused and more urban”.

Head of the Paris 2024 organising committee, Tony Estanguet, told AFP, “We have chosen to present the IOC with four sports that are as creative as spectacular, geared towards youth and completely in line with our vision.”

Inclusion of the additional four sports in Paris will not require the construction of permanent facilities, and the Paris committee is hopeful that they will be approved.
