A new app, GirlCrew has launched to connect women with one another and create new friendship and is somewhat similar to the popular online dating app Tinder.
GirlCrew was founded by Dublin resident, Elva Carri in 2014. On a Friday night Carri wanted to head out dancing but none of her friends were available.
Bravely, Elva turned to Tinder and was flooded with 100 female matches that wanted to be friends and head out for the evening.
The social media group began to grow and prompted Carri to create GirlCrew, an app dedicated to helping women forge friendships in their surrounding areas and engage in fun activities.
Carri brought on accompanying co-founders, Aine Mulloy and Pamela Newenham as the service began to increase in popularity.
The app creates events where new members can meet and socialize with one another – from coffee catch ups, surf trips, mini-holiday breaks to bubble soccer and more.
With the hustle and bustle of the 21st century, it can be hard to meet new people as Carri shares with CNN, “It’s not that they don’t have friends — it’s just everyone is so busy all the time, we need to optimize the time we do have.”
How the app works
The app launched in Ireland in 2017 followed by Australia, the United Kingdom and the USA in 2018.
Users are able to download on iOs or Android devices and their computers for free.
GirlCrew premier is available in Ireland at USD 12/R159 and San Francisco for USD 20/ R265 per month. Premier membership allows users to access promotions, offers and private events hosted by GirlCrew.
Members can login to the app using their Facebook credentials or email.
Users are required to send a message to GirlCrew and prove their identity in order to ensure the safety of all who use the app.
GirlCrew aims to ensure that all users are validated and prevent infamous ‘cat fishing’, where online users claim to be someone they are not.
The service has various ‘groups’ within the app and allow users to pick their favorites from city locations, travel, fitness and wellness, entrepreneurs to dating advice.
The platform allows users to share experiences, provide help and create meaningful connections.
If there is a group that users would like to be created, submissions can be sent to the GirlCrew offices for consideration.
The app strives to ensure the all members are treated fairly and reminds users that each member comes from a different walk of life, but it is imperative to respect and care for one another.
“Our most important guideline is that no matter how different we are to each other, we treat each other with respect, kindness and patience” GirlCrew states.
It may be daunting to meet a bunch of people you haven’t ever engaged with but GirlCrew assists you to take the dive and after a few minutes or so everyone gets more comfortable and engages with each other.
“Most of the time members tend to end up looking like they’ve known each other all their lives within 5-15 mins.” GirlCrew shares.
With August being Women’s month, GirlCrew is the perfect way to make a new friend or experience something different with a community of women near you.
