A trip to the orchestra never ceases to be a special occasion, whether it’s at the ballet, an ensemble at the Artscape or part of a musical. This weekend I had the pleasure of sitting on the rolling Kirstenbosch lawns to watch our local heroes, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, perform three classical pieces as the sun set. It was their annual summer concert and the performance was as magical as ever.
If you don’t consider yourself a musical person, can’t imagine appreciating Wagner (‘it’s only for the culturally elite’) or use the excuse of having ‘no musical ear’, I challenge you to sit up close and personal with the Philharmonic. It will change your opinion. It really is a work of art and genius, and the hours that these musicians must put into perfecting their art are nothing short of admirable.
If you weren’t fortunate enough to watch them at Kirstenbosch, don’t fret, they have an exciting line-up this February. The summer concert will take place at City Hall on the 5th, 12th and 19th of February (early or belated Valentine’s Day perhaps?) with a Duet Concert concluding at the Artscape Theatre on the 22nd. See the full line-up here.
The Philharmonic is an orchestra for all seasons, so keep an eye on the performances that will be gracing our theatres this year.
